Please pray for Sonia, she's broken beyond words
Imagine you walking into church and all eyes are on you simply because your own mother has made you a topic of discussion? Well my mom used to use me as example in her Sunday School classes but this one is gross, I feel for this girl.
Sonia called
me earlier today to rant, she needed someone to talk to and I’m glad she trusted
me enough to share her burden. Someone else would think she’s overthinking this
but we handle situations differently, here’s her story, and yes, she gave me
permission to write about it.
Sonia is the
first of two children; she has a younger brother who is still in the
university. She is beautician, she has her own line of skincare products,
organic stuff that ladies use and she’s not doing badly for herself because she
can take care of her basic needs.
Sonia has a “paranoid”
mother (in her own words) and that’s where half or more of the problems come
from, her mother practically thinks she’s irresponsible for studying
Mathematics from Unilag and opting not to hustle 9-5 with the certificate.
Most of us
have parents who decided what we studied in school, choice of institution and
even to some extent, life partners and as we all know such arrangement would be
full of hits and misses, it’s not going away anytime soon because some of us
wouldn’t let our children choose.
Personally,
if I ever have a male child, he’s coming into the world to fulfil my
#ProjectMbappe, it’s not up for discussion, he can decide which club he wants
to play for but he must play professional football, not negotiable and that
stays like that.
Sonia’s case
is weird in a way; her mother retired from Union Bank and she believed Sonia would
take up a banking job, my friend has other ideas and her mother isn’t having
it, she has done everything possible to embarrass her, the one that happened
this morning was the height.
I forgot to
mention, Sonia is from a roman catholic family and today happens to be Ash
Wednesday, which means there was a mass at their cathedral earlier today. Sonia
said her mother went to church this morning with a placard that reads “PRAY FOR
MY DAUGHTER, SHE HAS DECIDED TO BE A PROSTITUTE”…
Sonia is hardworking,
one her mother should be proud of but the poor woman doesn’t understand that
not everyone is destined to be a corporate worker, Sonia doesn’t belong to the
urgent 2k category, she fends well for herself and she’s doing amazingly well…
She was broken beyond words.
Imagine friends
calling you, sending you pictures of your mother carrying such placard and
asking people to pray for you for such, I did my best to calm her down while
hoping Fred (her boyfriend that is my friend) sees to it that she gets over
this incident in one piece.
It’s a
culture that we have to unlearn, again I must say I’m not the right person to
address this because #ProjectMbappe must happen, even if I don’t have a male
child in two attempts, I’ll adopt and he already has a career, but I’m sad for
Sonia.
Oh, you’re
running through my friend list to figure who Sonia is? Of course that’s not her
real name, you don’t rate me at all o, so you expect me to use her real name?
But if you’re my friend, you’ll already know who “Sonia” is, you probably know
her struggle too.
While we’re
hoping more Sonia’s pop up with knowledge for self reliance and legit hustles,
mamma is here making her feel like she’s incomplete because she’s not
interested in 9-5 job, does she know how many 9 to fiver that are miserable and
would rather do something else?
Most
corporate folks I know have a side hustle they’re investing into and would
definitely dump this corporate crap for it as soon as they have a sound
footing, or you don’t know is daily bread that makes many stick to “kindly find
attached”?
Lol Tiwalade
is spending fortune trying to become a skincare mogul, Bennie owns Springers24
and Local Man Clothing, Seemi Pleasures is owned by an agency lady and Tunde
Black runs errands on clothing matters when he’s not setting up events for
Monetium, mamma has to wake up mhen.
I feel for
Sonia and I’d love to read from y’all, did anyone influence what you studied in
school? Are you married to your friend or who your people want? Tell me about
it and remember to leave your name behind, kindly pray for my friend, she’s
broken.
😀 our parents need to understand we all can't work 9-5.... My parents are the "do what works for you" type , just know what you're doing. I feel for Sonia tho .
ReplyDeleteSigh.. I feel her pain oo. I still explain to my father every December what experiential marketing is...and this is after over 7years of doing it... They just dont get it.. Its not their fault, but they should learn to support their kids hustle no matter what. Well provided you dont steal, kill or swindle..
ReplyDeleteWell, I can't relate. From choice of uni to choice of partner my parents gave me the freewill. I'm grateful to God for that. I love 'em so much.
ReplyDeleteLove & Light Sonia
