She wants to fly but her wings are clipped...

Image
The eagle wants to fly but her wings are clipped by the gardeners that she trusted for peas and nuts, God bless Nigeria. (Photo credit: Amaka) On this occasion of Nigeria's Independence Day celebrations, I penned this piece as it reflects the state of the nation. It all looks bleak with the lots at the helm but I am hopeful that someday, the bird will break free from the shackles of the clips and fly again... I'm sure you've heard a lot about the land that is flowing with milk and honey but can you relate? They say we're endowed but does it reflect in the lives of the average Joes on the street? Where then does the hope of the common man lie if he can't access the much advertised milk and honey? You’ve heard it before, milk and honey Whatever that means, to me it’s funny The love is fake, unlike hunny bunny It’s raining tears, who will make it sunny? The land is ailing, the birds are wailing Nothing is working; best brains are bailing The Visa man is b...

The demons of Nigeria couldn't stop our global champion

Tobi Amusan becomes the first Nigerian to win gold medal at the diamond league following her historic 12.06 world record in the 100m hurdle event. (Photo credit: BBC) I like how everyone is famzing Tobi Amusan after we woke up to her world record in the diamond league but how many people offered her solace when her dream was truncated in Lagos not too long ago by the demons of our land? She witnessed it first-hand. I don’t know about you, but tears rolled down my cheek when I saw the video of the young champion on the podium as she received her medal and Nigeria’s national anthem blitzed out of the loud speaker, not sure I’ve ever been that emotional about our national anthem, not even when the Super Eagles are playing. It’s all joy today as she danced to Bu...

June 12: There's nothing to celebrate

Image
Democracy is a joke in Nigeria but we can celebrate because it's Buhari's last... Where do we go from here? (Photo credit: Someone's status) It’s the Democracy Day in Nigeria, a day set aside to celebrate the movement that granted us the supposed freedom to choose who lead us as the constitution allows but are we truly free? Can we say for sure, that since 1999 that the democratic dispensation started again after historic military abortions, that votes have counted and the principal officers that the people wanted have been the ones in charge? I’ve seen lots of ads by brands on democracy day and they’re mostly about asking people to get their PVC, and I’m wondering who we’re going to vote with the PVC when it is as clear as day that the battle is between the two parties that have failed us in the past. I know my compatriots are all about Peter Obi, but how many of these people understand how politics work in Nigeria? You need presence in every ward in every local go...
