June 12: There's nothing to celebrate

Democracy is a joke in Nigeria but we can celebrate because it's Buhari's last... Where do we go from here? (Photo credit: Someone's status) |
It’s the Democracy Day in Nigeria, a day set aside to celebrate the movement that granted us the supposed freedom to choose who lead us as the constitution allows but are we truly free?
Can we say for sure, that since 1999 that the democratic
dispensation started again after historic military abortions, that votes have
counted and the principal officers that the people wanted have been the ones in
charge?
I’ve seen lots of ads by brands on democracy day and they’re
mostly about asking people to get their PVC, and I’m wondering who we’re going
to vote with the PVC when it is as clear as day that the battle is between the
two parties that have failed us in the past.
I know my compatriots are all about Peter Obi, but how many of
these people understand how politics work in Nigeria? You need presence in
every ward in every local government for you to win presidential election, how
many wards do you think Labor party has presence as we speak?
Listen, I am happy that we’re seeking a third force, but that
force can only rattle anyone if he or she is coming from either of the two top
parties. It takes a lot to build a party structure that will win elections, Peter
Obi isn’t even the candidate of Labor Party as we speak, they’re in court… Can
we get serious?
I was a very little boy when June 12 happened and was probably too
naïve to understand what went down but I read and listened to lots of angles. I
am not sure MKO Abiola would have changed our fortunes, if you delve deeper
beyond emotions and what people say at pubs, you’d agree with me.
Democracy is a joke in Nigeria and it’s a sad thing to admit.
There’s impunity everywhere and it’s a norm now; freedom is relative because
someone will witch-hunt you with the force he controls. The so called
celebrities that are championing the PVC cause are low-key earning big bucks
from these politicians and we’re all in the know.
Didn’t some of them meet with the government recently? That Tao
came on Twitter to shalaye? If all of you don’t getat… Nonsense. But I have a
good news for you, this is Buhari’s last democracy day as Nigeria’s president
but who will take over from him?
