I think I once wrote about the fact that I usually start off on the wrong note with people I eventually bond with, I won’t jump on the train like I was the biggest fan in the early days but I can say for a fact that I am one of those that adore and will forever celebrate Serena Williams.
Of course everyone knows how much I love football as a kid but one
sport that caught my fancy way back was Tennis and after the likes of Andre Agassi,
Pete Sampras and my all time fav, Roger Federer, Serena Williams will always
have a special place in my heart.
I must be very clear from here, I don’t align with all the gender
coin she’s been throwing around with her retirement news; I’m happy to be
controversial and misunderstood but I’ll rather dwell on her illustrious career
rather than whatever she’s on about with the gender yen yen yen.
Early on, I was a big Venus Williams fan. I always wanted her to
win even against Serena; it took me a very long while to come to terms with the
fact that Serena is better but when I eventually did, I became her number one
fan and even in retirement, I will always respect her.
I’m sure I’m not the only one that painted Serena as the ideal
partner, she hasn’t even left my fantasy but can we spend some time to talk
about the magic of this woman? I’m so loud about my respect for Cristiano
Ronaldo but I can tell you for free that Serena stands neck-to-neck with him on
my GOAT throne.
23 grand slams as a single player and 14 grand slams on doubles,
no one else has spent as much time on top as number one in the female tennis ranking
as Serena with 186 weeks on top; Serena won 73 titles and 4 Olympic medals…
Show me someone better, I’ll wait.
As she retires, all I can wish her is happiness and skin-deep one
at that. I know we’ll hear lots of stories and many would border around gender,
we’ve had male players retire due to injuries and all, she has nothing to prove
to anyone as she’s the best ever to play the game.
Happy retirement world best, Queen Serena Williams.
You forgot to add 367 major match wins! The greatest to ever do it
