How I saved Jane from her Twitter boyfriend

There’s no time I talk to Ebere that I don’t remember the ill-fated money-doubling scheme called MMM that year. My conversation this morning on my way to work with a former colleague that was about to be scammed before Special Agent Rambo stepped in brought this to mind.

Jane and I worked in the same agency about eight years ago, she was one hell of a smart lady then; a proven copywriter that also doubled as a rich media manager, social media wasn’t all that then but she was one of the earlier frontiers.

A contact she met on Twitter introduced a scheme to her and it looked so believable as she was making money without personal investment. She didn’t tell me but I’ll bet my life there’s more between them than “hello how are you” but that isn’t why I’m writing today.

The contact (male of course) talked her into a scheme that doubles investment on the spot, I’m sure you’ve heard of that nonsense before and I know you’re wondering “in 2022”? The plot twist is the fact that dude told her he invested 20k for her and asked her to send her account details next day, he credited her 40k.

She was impressed, dude asked her to invest the 40k for 80k in 24 hours and she did. She got credited 80k the next day and as some people are, I’m trying not to say women especially, she was already convinced and ready to go hard.

The conversation with the contact started about two months ago, they had long calls and already shared personal information. Dude knew she had some money (about 5m) in safe lock and it’s a no-brainer that he’s targeting that but he already made it look real so aunty Jane was ready to go hard until the conversation earlier today.

She called to wish me a belated happy birthday and also to remind me of a discussion we had sometime ago, one thing led to the other and the investment talks came on; I didn’t mince word but that was after I clearly opened her eyes with just one experiment.

I told her to call the guy and insist that she’s only willing to invest 80k, the guy wasn’t having it and they took it to WhatsApp. Back and forth for an hour and the guy got angry, blocked her on WhatsApp and stopped taking her calls.

She got one of her friends to call the guy, request for the investment details as she’s interested off Jane’s information. Dude wasn’t coherent and eventually gave inconsistent stories; He came back after an hour, ready to accept Jane’s 80k investment but she said she’s not doing again.

He has given her over 40 missed calls since then, the entire 80k belongs to him, he thought he could gaslight her into dropping big money so he can run off, now he’s the one that needs his 80k and she won’t dare return one naira to him.

Let me quickly post this story and then call Ebere, she’s the one that knows how to do all these money doubling nonsense deals… I can’t stop laughing.
