Orijin Tigernut and Ginger beer... My honest review

Guinness Nigeria must be told that they got this one wrong, the Orijin Tigernut and Ginger beer is as terrible as having to work on a public holiday. (Photo credit: Guinness Nigeria)

From time to time, in a bid to satisfy consumers, brands think ahead of competitors or pioneer an innovation, try to launch new products, and half the time, they miss the mark; an example of that is the topic of discussion today… Orijin Tigernut and ginger beer.

It was a weird Friday at work, and I needed to spice things up as usual. Pritei has had her boring playlist on replay, and I needed to allow diversity, so I let her enjoy her meal; I was working on a sanitary pad pitch deck, and I shouldn’t talk about how I felt while working on that account.

I managed to hold it together till lunchtime, then I called on my favorite office assistant Benson to get me lunch and a chilled bottle of Orijin beer; I knew that would help to get the deck over the line, it always does, but Benson gave me panic attacks not long afterward.

He took way too long to return, quite unlike him; Godwin is the one that takes forever to come back even if you send him to the reception, and Blessing is a no-go area, she legit acts like she’s everyone’s boss; how no one has charged her to court for bullying beats me.

Benson eventually returned but not with my Orijin beer; instead, he handed me a weird-looking bottle with Orijin on it but with a different surname. I’d heard of the Orijin Tigernut and ginger beer before then; I’d seen billboards and lampposts but never tasted it; that fateful Friday was my first.

I had terrible feelings even before I tasted it, maybe it was the fear of trying something new, but my fears were quickly confirmed on the first sip; the drink tasted like a bad relationship, from the first drop to the last I tried, trust me on this it was a bad experience.

I jumped online to find out what folks were saying about it; I kid you not, it was a ratio 9-1, and I wonder why it took them so long to figure out that their new baby would go down like the infamous Nokia X franchise, in every language I understand, it was a failed experiment.

I understand the need to throw in new variants to appeal to a particular market, but the Orijin Tigernut and Ginger drink didn’t live up to the hype. The brand has stopped spending money on marketing for this specific product, and a bird whispered that they’re already withdrawing it from the market.

I was with Dipo and the gang over the weekend to record the latest episodes of the Music, Movies, and Sports podcast, and Dipo came with this exact product; it was his first time trying the product, and the honest guy would certainly never try it again, he was disappointed.

The original Orijin beer is the real deal, a drink and half a, and it always works; when in doubt, take Orijin beer, but you see the Tigernut and Ginger version of it? Whatever it was that the person behind the mix smoked before throwing that out should be banned from the market; it’s dangerous to health.
